conversations with CAVENDISH MORTON
Born in 1911, Cavendish Morton has been well known as a painter, designer, teacher and tireless promoter of twentieth-century art. This book about his life and work is based on conversations between the artist and Bella Janson in the years leading up to his one-hundredth birthday. Their dialogue spans ten decades and explores Morton’s early years, his work in East Anglia, along with his subtle and atmospheric scenes of the Solent familiar to so many on the Isle of Wight. Morton has been a genuine ‘artistic crusader’ with a belief that art should be enjoyed by as wide an audience as possible. In East Anglia he left a lasting legacy with his educational work and involvement with the Aldeburgh Festival, Norfolk Contemporary Art Society and Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury. With his keen mind and wonderful memory, Morton’s conversations are peppered with fascinating anecdotes which illuminate a significant portion of British cultural life in the last century.
A selection of over 170 colour images provides a retrospective look over his whole career and represents some of his best work in all genres.
